Well, I would have waited and bought her an AppleTV next year, but thats a separate issue. ;-)
TV calibration is based on adjustments to the controls in the User Menu in TV mode. This includes Color, Tint, Brightness, Contrast, and Whitepoint. The tool to do that is an application called SpyderTV. You can cross grade to that from Spyder3Elite, but its a Windows-only app. We won't go into Spyder4 in this regards, not yet. ;-)
However, if you run your Mom's TV though a MacMini, Windows Media Center, or some other such computer based system then yes, you can use Elite to calibrate it, just like any other computer monitor. Thats actually how I calibrate my TV...
