Has the software for this older outfit been upgraded? Are the profiles made from it top notch? Better than or as good as the profiles created by a Colormunki? Mike

Software for printer profiling is being updated, but no feature or function changes. It's always been significantly better than the ColorMunki, and with hugely more controls. Older display calibration tools are not being updated. The new features require a Spyder 4 to function. C. D. Tobie Global Product Technology Mngr. Hi C.D., Are you saying there IS a software update in the works for this device? When will it be available? --- In datacolor_group@yahoogroups.com, Cdtobie <CDTobie@...> wrote:

I believe I've covered this all in some detail already on this list, which is why I was terse last time. Sorry if that caused any confusion. Simply put: Display Calibration: There is no way to use the new Spyder4 software with Spyder3 hardware. The new device has significant internal changes, so there is no way to upgrade your Spyder3 to use the Spyder4 apps. Printer Profiling: No changes to the hardware (though the finish and logo will change at some point) so Datacolor will continue to support all older devices with the new SpyderPrint software. Don't get too excited, as this is a housekeeping update, and while there may be a bug fix or two, it won't contain any feature changes from the previous version on our site. Spyder3 to Spyder4 "upgrades": There is no such thing as hardware upgrade, it's just a new product, same as with other companies. Historically, once the initial demand for a new Spyder has been caught up with (it usually takes a few months, Datacolor only has one factory) user loyalty programs, trade in or rebate programs appear. These are regional in nature, as the regulations and practicalities vary. If your current Spyder is doing the job nicely for the displays you currently own, you might choose to wait and see what offers arise in the future, or you might wait until you get a new display of a more challenging type. Or you might rush out and line up overnight at B&H to be the first photographer in your town to own a Spyder4. Personally, I'd suggest ordering online; it's cold out at night this time of year! C. Let me repost this, with a more descriptive title, since these may be the most asked questions this month: Display Calibration: There is no way to use the new Spyder4 software with Spyder3 hardware. "PrintFIX PRO" as a name went away a few years ago when we changed the naming on the software to Spyder3Print (and which will now be SpyderPRINT, as soon as I've uploaded the latest set of installers). If so (the last version of PrintFIX PRO was 2.1), you've missed the 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 versions of the software. (The fact that we added "SR" to the name for the 4.x versions is that we added support for the newer SR "strip reading" spectro. But the updated software continues to support all of the original DC1005 spectros that had shipped with the earlier Print and Studio bundles). "Today", if you're still running PrintFIX PRO-named software, you should get the Spyder3Print SR 4.2.2 installer from the Datacolor site, download and run it and that will get you "up-to-date". When I post the next modified installer and set of software with the "SpyderPRINT" name change, I'll be bumping the version up to 4.2.3 to go along with the name change. (But there are no new "features", changes, or bug fixes in the upcoming 4.2.3 version, this is all just about changing the name) One other comment for anyone reading this. If you have the Windows version of the software, the best way to upgrade is as follows: - Unplug the spectro - Uninstall your existing version of the software. If you have measurement files saved, don't worry - they'll stay "in place" and the new version should locate them and hook back into them once installed. - Download the new installer and run it (with the spectro still unplugged) - Reboot - After Windows is finished starting up again, plug the spectro back in. You should get the usual notifications about new hardware being located; and then, available for use. - Run the new version of software and you'll be up and running again. - Also, download and read through the Update Notes file so that you can see what's changed over the past few versions.
