Win 7 new user profile no LUT loaded issue

Win 7 new user profile no LUT loaded issue

2012-11-07 by tlbepson

Using Win7Pro/64bit and my monitor (Asus PA248Q) has been calibrated using Sypder3Elite (most current version of the software). Profile/LUT is loaded by the Spyder3Utility, displaying a message when the load is done--takes about 20 seconds for that message to display once I've logged in to my primary (admin) user account. The Spyder3Utility shortcut is in the All Users StartUp subfolder.

I created a new admin user profile, rebooted and logged into the new user account to establish the account info. Rebooting again, I logged into a 3rd admin user account and then copied my primary (admin) user account profile to the new (admin) user account (this required the use of a little app to enable the "Copy to" button in the Control Panel's User Profiles area (Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > User Profiles)).

I rebooted and logged into my primary (admin) user account to make sure things were still working there--they were--and the Spyder3Utility loaded the LUT with the load message displayed in its normal timeframe. Did a couple of things from within this user account and all is working properly.

I rebooted choosing the new (admin) user profile which loads looking like my primary user profile. I waited for the Spyder3Utility to load the LUT but there was no display of load message. After waiting a minute or two, I modified the Notification/Task bar to show the items all the time--my primary user profile settings were not copied to the new user profile--and I thought perhaps the Spyder3Utility load message didn't display because of the settings for the Spyder3Utility notifications icon.

I then checked the Spyder3Utility Preferences and they were set at the default values and I set them as follows:
General: 30 seconds/pulse continuously
Ambient: Never
Video Card: 1 minute (my primary user profile has this set to Never)
Certification: 6 months/6 months/6 months
Recalibration: 6 months/6 months
Startup: Always

I changed the desktop background color--a way for me to quickly visually know I'm in the copy-version user profile--saving that new theme.

I rebooted again logging into the new (admin) user account and the Spyder3Utility still does not display the LUT load message.

The Sypder3Utility "Explain Status" shows the application loaded and the monitor but no info on the LUT load. I tried using the Spyder3Utility "Load Calibration" option but it doesn't appear to load (no screen flicker when the LUT is loaded) and the "Explain Status" shows an updated time stamp but no "Load Video Card LUT" message is in "Explain Status". It could be that the profile/LUT is loaded but I don't think so.

I'm not quite sure what the problem is. It seems to me that I shouldn't have to create a new monitor profile for the "new" user since the monitor and environment are the same but...perhaps I'm wrong about that?

Suggestions?

Thanks much!

Both Mac and Windows are cracking down on global controls in newer OSes. Might as well get used to having to calibrate from each account, and store profiles in the User location, as I suspect that is the future for all of us...

Ahhhh...ok...well, at least my thinking about this wasn't completely illogical...

Thanks...

Re: Win 7 new user profile no LUT loaded issue

Just thought I'd report a test I tried once I knew that the problem with the LUT not loading in my new Win7 user profile to which I copied my primary user profile data was not the result of an error on my part.

In AppData\Local\Datacolor\ in my primary user profile which I was logged into when I calibrated my monitor, there is a "Spyder3Elite" subfolder which contains the following:
Folders: DisplayHistory, DisplayInformation and MQA
Files: cie_vect.jpg, Licenses and Preferences

I copied those folders and files to the (appdata\local\datacolor\) Spyder3Elite subfolder in my new user profile--I was not logged into this profile when I did the copy. The Spyder3Elite subfolder in this new user profile had been empty.

I rebooted logging in to my new user profile and BINGO! the LUT loaded as it does for my primary user profile.

Both of these profiles are admin level users. I don't know if this would work for standard users--don't see why not but I don't have any standard users defined on my system.

The full address of the place to look and/or copy is:

c:\windows\users\MYCALIBRATIONUSERID\appdata\local\datacolor\spyder3elite

where "MYCALIBRATIONUSERID" is the userid one was logged into when the calibration was done and the monitor profile created.

Hope the above might help other Win7 users...
