Rendering Intent - Saturation

Rendering Intent - Saturation

2006-05-16 by potomacbassfisher

In the Luminous Landscape review of the Printfix Pro the author seems
to love the product as has most everyone (myself included) but
something he lists as a "con" confuses me.

He says "The default saturation rendering intent of the test prints is
a poor choice, out of gamut colors will be mapped to ANY color, as long
as it is saturated. One can choose perceptual, relative colorimetric,
or absolute colorimetric intents. I prefer perceptual."

Am I to take this to mean that when I create the profile I am creating
it with a rendering intent in mind? I thought I could create the
profile and use it with any rendering intent from the program that I'm
printing from...

Please inform.

No, profiles are built without an intent in mind, and then utilized with an intent, plus (ideally) with some pre-intent manipulation.

Correct. The Luminous Landscape quote is a bit loose at best; I suspect he's saying that he objects to the way that Saturation intent can skew hues, though this action does not map to "just any color", it maps quite specificly to intelligently chosen colors, just not ones with the hue values that the reviewer is looking for. Which is fine, if he likes other methods better, we offer other intents to satisfy that... which is why I never objected to that passage in the review, even though I don't feel its very effective in what the reviewer is attempting to say, nor very fair to PrintFIX PRO.

I have a partial objection to the statement in the review. To me it
seemed misleading though it is technicaly correct. First it should be
pointed out that when a profile is created ... it is automaticaly
created with THREE rendering intents encapsulated in the file. In
fact to be a standards compliant ICC profile you pretty much have to
include all three intents every time.

The author is refering to the default intent being used for the *test*
prints created by PrintFIX PRO at the end of the profiling process.
It is also inaccurate to say that saturation intent maps out of gamut
colors to what could be interpreted to be random colors. It doesn't
do that but out of gamut colors do look clipped ... and rightly so
because thats what you're instructing the color management engine to do.

SO ... when you see that little box on the bottom which asks you which
rendering intent you want to use for the test prints ... it does NOT
mean that there is somehow a "Default" intent set in the profile
itself or that the other intents are not built.

Does that help?

PrintFIX PRO v1.1 no longer defaults to Saturation, it now remembers what intent you selected last time, and offers that again, though of course you can change it to whatever you want.
