I had a mark 3 and upgraded It does have an external power supply. It plays quieter if required. I did not notice any inferior sounds from the dkc850 personally. If you are serious about recording mult tracks stick with what you have but if you want iPhone control, quieter playback, disklavier radio etc it's worth the upgrade in my opinion.
