Asking again...

Asking again...

2014-07-03 by larsmagnus@...

I´m sort of rephrasing questions from two months ago, just in hope to get new and more information...

I´ve just bought a Disklavier DC3A with the DKC55RCD control unit.

1) I´m thinking of upgrading to the new DKC850 control unit, and have read about new funktions on it. Is there someone on this group who has done this, and can judge the difference in sound quality you get from the sounds when you update?
Someone answered that the sound quality actually seems inferior with the new unit. This is confusing, how could that be possibly on a unit ten years newer? Can anyone else confirm that?

2) I´m visiting some cities in the US this summer and I´m thinking of buying the new one then.
In Chicago, Minneapolis, San Fransico and Los Angeles, can you people living there recommend a good store? What price would I expect to get?
Did´nt get answers on this one, hope to be more lucky now...

3)
Does the the new DKC850 has it´s power transformation inside or in an outer adapter, which can be changed if used overseas?

Thanks in advance...

I had a mark 3 and upgraded

It does have an external power supply.

It plays quieter if required.

I did not notice any inferior sounds from the dkc850 personally.

If you are serious about recording mult tracks stick with what you have but if you want iPhone control, quieter playback, disklavier radio etc it's worth the upgrade in my opinion.

I think you can only record 2 tracks on the dkc 850 but I think 16 on the mark 3 box you have

Good morning, everyone.

The Mark IIXG and Mark III systems had a built-in function for multi-track recording. The DKC-850 does not have this feature. The DKC-850 does, however, support the playback of multitrack MIDI files as well as multitrack MIDI data that is received from an external source, such as from a computer or InternetRadio.

I have never thought of the lack of built-in, multitrack recording to be an issue because multitrack recording is so much easier to accomplish using your Disklavier with a sequencer that runs on a computer. I can understand, however, that there are Disklavier owners who may wish that feature was available on the DKC-850.

Good morning, everyone.

Here is my attempt to answer the 3 questions:

(1) I have personally not noticed a difference nor a degradation of sound quality when upgrading from a Mark IIXG to a DKC-850.

(2) This Yamaha webpage will enable you to search for Disklavier dealers by zip code: http://usa.yamaha.com/dealers/

To determine zip codes where you’ll be traveling, you can look them up here: https://tools.usps.com/go/ZipLookupAction_input

Alternatively, you can pick out zip codes off of a map: http://www.unitedstateszipcodes.org

(3) Regarding power, you might want to check out the product brochure on the Yamaha website in the US:

Under the heading Rated Power Voltage/Frequency it says, "DC12V 3A, 50/60Hz.”

The brochure contains a picture of the back of the unit where you plug the power supply in. The connecting point is a circular with positive polarity in the middle. In the US, the unit comes with an external, brick-style power supply that has the following information printed on it:

Input: 100-240v ~ 50/60Hz 1.2A
Output: 12.0v 3.0A

Although the DKC-850 manual does not talk about the power issue, you may find it handy to look over. A PDF version is available on the Disklavier Education Network website:

I hope that helps.

Regards,
PianoBench

I'm intrigued about the DKC850 enabling quieter playback if required.

I have a Mark IIXG and have been thinking about getting the DKC850 for a variety of reasons.

Can anyone confirm that the DKC850 will allow quieter on a Mark IIXG if required. Perhaps this is covered in the DKC850 technical information, but it's been a while since I've read through the available documentation.

Thx . . . / Robert

How does this work? Does the soft pedal go further distance than before?

At -10 on my Mark II the piano is pretty soft, but lacks any of the real dynamics of the original performance - what's the point?

It's nothing to do with the soft pedal. All I know is that you can play back a good step lower. You can also calibrate the piano with the dkc850 which possibly allows it to play the piano back softer than the older dkc box

Again, -10 is pretty soft on my piano, but not really enjoyable as it sounds little like a real performance, as no one could or would want to play that softly. YMMV

But for Disklavier owners who want the piano to play background music lower volume playback is very attractive.

Maybe all models are different. My MPX100II plays pretty soft at -10. It is an upright, grand might be louder with larger soundboard. Mine is playing now, pretty nice as background for guests coming for 4th holiday party. Have a good 4th everyone!

Re: [disklavier] Asking again...

2014-07-04 by PianoBench@...

Good evening, everyone.

Robert, I don't believe that Yamaha makes any claims about softer playback. Please be aware that the DKC-850 upgrade does not change any of the record, playback, or other physical components of the instrument.

Regards,
PianoBench

I have a Mark IIXG and have been thinking about getting the DKC850 for a variety of reasons.

Can anyone confirm that the DKC850 will allow quieter on a Mark IIXG if required. Perhaps this is covered in the DKC850 technical information, but it's been a while since I've read through the available documentation.

Thx . . . / Robert

Does the the new DKC850 has it´s power transformation inside or in an outer adapter, which can be changed if used overseas?

Thanks in advance...

Yesterday I was hacked. As a result emails are being sent to my contacts from three different email accounts:

The hack contains a URL for you to click on. Do not click on it.

I will lay low from the group for awhile and will take whatever steps are necessary. If I send a post, I will begin it with From BB -

Thank you for helpful information!
The zip code map makes searching on the yamaha page a lot easier for me.
Still, I welcome group members in the cities of Chicago, Minneapolis, SanFransisco and Los Angeles to let me know if you have a favorite Yamaha Disklavier store.
The power supply seems to handle 220V(Sweden) so I just need an adapter for the cord.
