Ouch... that hurts :-(

Seriously... 

When I bang (my best attempt at playing music) on the keyboard, do I 
click record on my Cakewalk application?  

For controller to laptop:  Do I need to configure anything on the 
controller to send the signal to the laptop and the keyboard at the 
same time?
