My experience with a sound which wasn't supposed to be there was detected
and corrected by my tech on his first visit.  The first time, it was due to
the fact that the push rod from the sustain pedal did not sit properly in
the the "cup" (or fitting) that it connects to...thus causing a
rattle/thump. The second time was when he found a pencil which somehow found
its way onto the desk of the piano.

...thought i'd relay my experience...good luck.
