DGT2IIXG thumping noise

DGT2IIXG thumping noise

2002-08-28 by rick.conti

For lack of a better explanation - when I depress the sustain pedal and hit
a key from near left of middle C up I hear a distinct thumping sound after
the sound of the note. The technician for my area has never worked on my
type of piano so he doesn't know if that's the way it should sound. I don't
think it is because it's very annoying. I have talked to Mark Wisner at
Yamaha and since he can't hear it over the phone he's not sure of what I'm
trying to describe. Has anyone ever heard of this, know if it's a problem,
or should it sound like that? Thanks, Rick (rickconti@...)

Re: [disklavier] DGT2IIXG thumping noise

In intention, at least, the Disklavier portion of the instrument was
designed so as not to interfere or even be connected to the piano
portion. While that design intention is true of the action, it's not
quite true for the left and right pedals, though the intrusion is minimal.

Therefore, I would make the assumption that you are experiencing a piano
problem--not a DKV problem. A good piano technician, Yamaha-trained or
otherwise, should be able to troubleshoot the cause of the thump without
needing to know about the DKV portion. If the technician that you have
can't decide whether the thump belongs there or not, I'd suggest you
look for another technician--one who is qualified to look at the action
and see what's going on.

Robert, excuse my ignorance but this is my first piano and I've only had it
for about 6 months. Are you saying that the Disklavier portion is
considered the electronic part of the piano?

I'm sorry Rick! I'm the one who is ignorant! I should have noticed
that you have a GranTouch. May I assume that the thump is acoustic and
not coming out of the tone generator? If so, it sounds as though the
thump is in the action. Is it under warranty and have you contacted
your dealer? If you can't get a Yamaha-trained tech, I'd still consider
having any piano tech with a good reputation take a look at the action.

RE: [disklavier] DGT2IIXG thumping noise

2002-08-29 by Rick Conti

I've only had my piano for 6 months so yes, it is under warranty. My piano
has no strings so I'm thinking it has something to do with the tone
generator. I do have a Yamaha trained tech, but he isn't trained on my
particular type of piano. I'm going to be talking to my dealer tomorrow to
see if they can round up someone who is trained on my piano.

Make sure the volume is turned up sufficiently to hear the music. All piano
actions have mechanical noises, so if the volume is too low it will sound
annoying.

Is this noise a new development? Has the piano been moved recently? Does
it only happen with the sustain pedal engaged? Is the noise when the key is
pressed down, or when the key is let up?

My experience with a sound which wasn't supposed to be there was detected
and corrected by my tech on his first visit. The first time, it was due to
the fact that the push rod from the sustain pedal did not sit properly in
the the "cup" (or fitting) that it connects to...thus causing a
rattle/thump. The second time was when he found a pencil which somehow found
its way onto the desk of the piano.

...thought i'd relay my experience...good luck.

Thanks for the info Mike! I'm sure as soon as my dealer and Yamaha find a
tech who has worked on my model piano the fix will be relatively simple.
Thanks again, Rick
