20 years ago, there was MIDI, but everyone had their own version. GM was the first attempt to standardize MIDI so that you knew what instrument was going to be assigned to what voice number. XG takes that standard into the next generation with more variations on the same voices. The tone generators that come with Yamaha Disklaviers use the XG parameters. It also means that they play the GM voices, which is what you see when you scroll through the Voice choices.
