GM XG midi what is the difference

GM XG midi what is the difference

2002-10-27 by Jimmy

Hello,

I was wondering if someone could help me understanding the nuance
between the "GM" and "XG" type of instrument set found on different
midi files, and how to apply my choice when making Disklavier disk?

Is there some that sound better on a Yamah Mark unit?
How about if I change the style of them when making making disklavier
format file, with Giebler on else?

Any comments appreciated.
Thanks you.

20 years ago, there was MIDI, but everyone had their own version. GM was
the first attempt to standardize MIDI so that you knew what instrument was
going to be assigned to what voice number. XG takes that standard into the
next generation with more variations on the same voices. The tone
generators that come with Yamaha Disklaviers use the XG parameters. It also
means that they play the GM voices, which is what you see when you scroll
through the Voice choices.

I realize this is probably an oversimplified answer, but there are others on
this list who can give you more details.

What do you means exactly by variations ofthe same vocies when you say:
quote: «XG takes that standard into the
next generation with more variations on the same voices»
I 'm not sure of what to make of it.
Any one else to educate me. Will one selection make it sound better when playing on a disklavier since it used the XG type. What I am asking is when editing file I have option to select between no change in voice, Yamaha XG, or GM. Will it change something if the piece is made with GM and I use the XG type when selecting.
That' s all I really want to know.
Thanks again for all your input. I am trying to make better midi file, for me and to share them with you, who a re uploading on this site.
Cheers
Jimmy
