Yamaha DGT7A

2003-07-07 by holly hegeman

Hello Everyone. Glad I finally found you, as the DUG group appears to be rather moribund. Is it still alive at all?

After months of researching and going back and forth between buying used or new, I finally decided to purchase a brand new DGT7A a little over a week ago. It could be delivered as early as the end of this week. I can’t wait for it to get here.

Why no acoustic?

Well, my mother-in-law has a gorgeous Steinway grand that someday will be ours, and we really don’t have the need for two large acoustic grands. Unless the cats and the dog start taking lessons.

However, the choice between the DGT2A and the 7A was difficult. Do I opt for the versatility of the smaller footprint, or do I go for the baby grand look in terms of styling?

Oddly enough, my husband was the one who went for the 7. Just thought it would “look better” in the family room.

My biggest problem, after I did my online research was actually finding either a 2A or a 7A to play. Yamaha dealers in both New Orleans and Baton Rouge did not have any. None. And I certainly was not going to buy one unless I could see for myself if a GranTouch was everything it had been cracked up to be, by those who own them.

So, on a business trip to San Francisco three weeks ago, I stopped in at Sherman Clay. They were quite gracious and allowed me to play any and everything in the store, including a fabulous Yamaha S-4 acoustic grand I fell in love with. But enough of that.

The upshot? I was totally impressed by both the sound quality and the “feel” of the DGT2A and DGT7A I played. It was simply amazing. Of course, considering the last “digital piano” I played was probably 20 years ago, well you get the drift. No, it wasn’t an S-4. But it has all the “other things” that I do want. The ability to play music files. The ability to have variable volume control. The sound and feel of a good piano. And (especially important in this part of the country) – no tuning! While it was hard to put aside my “purist” feelings — and plunk down money for an electronic machine, housed inside an acoustic box ̵2; for me, and my situation, the combination worked.

Anyway—;a quick newbie question. Do any of you use a line conditioner or surge protector on your pianos? I would think this would be a necessity.

Let me know.

Thanks.
