Re: How loud is the player mechanism?

2003-10-18 by sjhart110110

OK. The tech came out and did a procedure which was recommended by
Yamaha for these types of problems. He said that they "used" to
swap solenoids and/or magnets, etc. to try and fix the problem, but
that this new procedure always worked. Now I will try and explain
what the tech did! Groups of solenoids and magnets (the magnet is
the device that moves up to strike the hammers) have a brass cover
over them. I think there were about 6 of these long brass covers.
Each one had several (10-15) white or black solenoid (magnets) in
them. He had to remove each of these covers and line the inside
with a very small strip of black tape. The tape was VERY small
(1/16" or 1/32" wide). The tape was run from one end of the brass
cover to the other and was positioned right next to the hole were
the magnet is put into. The noise is caused by the magnet and/or
solenoid hitting these brass covers. Likely from the inside,
because the magnet has felt on it which would seem to protect it
from hitting the outside/top of the cover. The results were VERY
impressive. The entire mechanism (not just my problem keys) it MUCH
quieter. Amazing! Thanks. SJ

back if he only rotates them around.

Certainly not on a new piano.
