I also am on the PC side, but can comment that there are a lots of 
nice MIDI software for the Mac.
Just look in any good online software shop.

I can recomend you Peter Gannon's (www.pgmusic.com) Power Traks, if 
compared to Cakewalk Home Edition it has his pros and cons.

I have both on the PC, sometimes I use CW and some times PT.
The user interface is better in CW, but the feratures and perfomacne 
are comparable.

The main issue here is tha the price tag for PT of PGMUSIC is very 
attractive to start with.

Maybe a Mac user has better suggestions, since the will have the 
expertise on this side of the computers world.
