Re: [disklavier] Mark I Not Quiet Enough? Different Solenoids Than Mark III?

2003-12-01 by Carol Beigel

Everything electronic has changed in the last 6 years! A savings of $6000,
in my opinion, is not a good value to choose a Mark I over a Mark III. A
Mark I with added tone generator still needs old style 720k floppy disks and
does not play standard MIDI files from the floppy drive.

On the other hand, the Mark III has everything; uses HD disks, has 16 memory
disks, plays standard MIDI files in both format 0 and format 1, has built-in
audio with speakers, over 600 sounds in the XG tone generator, CD drive,
Silent system and those solenoids are much more sensitive in reproducing
piano performances. Also, the Mark III will play Que Time, Smart Key and
PianoSmart.

No disklavier in piano mode only is quiet enough to play during
"conversation". A disklavier will only play as quietly as a real piano
player sitting at the keyboard. However, the Mark III can be put in Silent
Mode, then the volume turned up. What you hear is the piano tone (and
Ensemble tones) coming through the speakers as audio, and this is infinitely
controllable like the audio on your stereo system. If people are engaged in
conversation, no one will notice that the piano sound is really coming from
the speakers mounted underneath the piano and not from the strings because
the keys are moving.

It's like the difference between a new Cadillac with OnStar system, and an
older model you have to set the gap in the spark plugs yourself!!
