Re: [disklavier] Piano-e-Competition on the web

Good morning, everyone.

Will any part of the competition stream the MIDI to be played on our respective disklaviers?

No.

If not this year, when?

I don't know. Streaming MIDI in a reliable way involves solving different issues compared to streaming audio or video. If streaming audio or video results in a few bits being dropped along the way, you may not notice the effect, or, if you do, the problem is momentary and the stream continues without difficulty.

If a stream of MIDI data drops a few bits, you could--for example--have missing note-off messages that would result in stuck notes.

It is true that there are strategies for dealing with this, and various people have proven the concept that streaming MIDI can work, even over dial-up connections. Unfortunately, there is no off-the-shelf package that is both available and reliable right now--at least none with which I am familiar.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
