Piano-e-Competition on the web

Piano-e-Competition on the web

2004-05-27 by PianoBench@aol.com

Good evening, everyone.

I trust that everyone knows that the final rounds of the 2nd Internal Piano-e-Competition are taking place this week and next at Hamline U. in St. Paul, MN. Contestants are performing on their choice of 2 Disklavier concert grands.

This week, the recital round is taking place. 22 of the 24 contestants who made the cut from the Disklavier screening round are competing. Two had to drop out for medical reasons.

After Sunday comes the Schubert Piano Sonata, Chamber Music, and Concerto Rounds followed by a gala concert played by the top 6 finalists.

All performances can be viewed and heard live on the web. In the near future, Disklavier MIDI files (Standard MIDI Files and E-SEQ) will be posted on the competition website.

Will any part of the competition stream the MIDI to be played on our respective disklaviers? If not this year, when?

Good morning, everyone.

Will any part of the competition stream the MIDI to be played on our respective disklaviers?

No.

If not this year, when?

I don't know. Streaming MIDI in a reliable way involves solving different issues compared to streaming audio or video. If streaming audio or video results in a few bits being dropped along the way, you may not notice the effect, or, if you do, the problem is momentary and the stream continues without difficulty.

If a stream of MIDI data drops a few bits, you could--for example--have missing note-off messages that would result in stuck notes.

It is true that there are strategies for dealing with this, and various people have proven the concept that streaming MIDI can work, even over dial-up connections. Unfortunately, there is no off-the-shelf package that is both available and reliable right now--at least none with which I am familiar.

To avoid bits dropping, the archived Realplayer video of the
performances could be made downloadable instead of being streamed.
Possible?

As I recall, the ability to save Realplayer streams is a function of
the type of Realplayer client one has. The purchased version allows
saving the received stream to a file, the free one does not. At
least that was the case several years ago. I am not current on what
is available now.

At 100kbps nominal streaming rate, the file size would be quite
large for an hour-long performance.

Try "Net Transport", a free download manager. It does support real-
time streaming protocol. The multi language version can be found at
http://lycos26486.l97.lycos.com.cn/download.htm.

I've downloaded all the streaming files quickly and conveniently.
Setting the connection speed at 16384 kB/s (Tools menu) and the
number of transport parts at 10 (the maximum)[tab new = Add New
Download], the download time for a 55 MB rm-file is on average 9
minutes.

Sorry to see you leave - if you are getting too much mail in your inbox
you can subscribe to the digest version (as suggested above, where all the
posts for a day are sent as one email) by going to http://groups.yahoo.com
and changing your subscription settings.
