I also went through this process about 4 years ago. I had a Steinway M that I considered retrofitting with a Pianodisc. I opted instead to trade that for a Yamaha DC5-pro. This was the right choice at the time for what I wanted. But after some time, I also wanted to be able to do some computer based recording and mix with other instruments. I found the Yamaha (and this would be true of other acoustic Midi based instruments) to not integrate well with this environment because of the 500ms latency issue. I also didn't like the physical setup of trying to accommodate a computer with the Grand Piano and be comfortable at whatever I was doing. So I ended up adding a Kurzweil PC2X for the computer work. In retrospect, I should have kept the Steinway (unaltered), and bought the Kurzweil. I rarely use the Disklavier for playback of files. Not that I don't enjoy the Yamaha for the sheer joy of playing it as an acoustic Grand, it is a great instrument for that. But it would have been way cheaper to go the other route and still satisfy my needs. So, understand what it is you want to do and look at electronic keyboard alternatives before jumping in.
