Basic guidance

Basic guidance

2004-12-06 by Michael Sullivan

Can anyone direct me to a source of basic infromation needed in purchasing a baby grand with player, for someone who knows nothing about them? I'm not sure I even know the meaningful differences between Disklavier and anything else, or whether the newer technology will matter to someone who wants to have a piano that plays itself & allows the kids to take lessons & me to fool around. Thanks.

Michael,

Here's a link to a web-site that compares the various player pianos on the
market today - Yamaha Disklavier, Pianodisc, ConcertMaster, and Pianomation.

http://www.pacifier.com/~larryf/compare.html
<http://www.pacifier.com/~larryf/compare.html>

I'm sure after going through the site above, you'll have a lot more
questions. The folks here are happy to answer your questions. A few years
back, I was in your situation. I was considering a player piano and
researched the various options available, including retro-fitting my
existing grand piano with a player system. After a lot of research, I
decided a Yamaha Disklavier was the best choice for me.

Keep the questions coming.

Regards,

Ken

Re: [disklavier] Basic guidance

I also went through this process about 4 years ago. I had a Steinway M
that I considered retrofitting with a Pianodisc. I opted instead to
trade that for a Yamaha DC5-pro. This was the right choice at the time
for what I wanted. But after some time, I also wanted to be able to do
some computer based recording and mix with other instruments. I found
the Yamaha (and this would be true of other acoustic Midi based
instruments) to not integrate well with this environment because of the
500ms latency issue. I also didn't like the physical setup of trying
to accommodate a computer with the Grand Piano and be comfortable at
whatever I was doing. So I ended up adding a Kurzweil PC2X for the
computer work.

In retrospect, I should have kept the Steinway (unaltered), and bought
the Kurzweil. I rarely use the Disklavier for playback of files. Not
that I don't enjoy the Yamaha for the sheer joy of playing it as an
acoustic Grand, it is a great instrument for that. But it would have
been way cheaper to go the other route and still satisfy my needs.

So, understand what it is you want to do and look at electronic
keyboard alternatives before jumping in.

Dave

That was a really interesting read but I note that there is nothing after
1998 so, I presume that things have moved on a bit in all of the systems.

I am also trying to make choices as to what system I am going to
purchase.

Hi

Please forward any messages you receive off list. I am in the same
position as you and am baffelled by the technology.

Like you, all I want is a piano that can play and record.

Thanks and good luck with the research.

Re: Basic guidance

2004-12-07 by jnugent64

I went through a similar scenario of evaluating the baby Grand with
Player. I selected the Yamaha Disklavier for the following reasons:

Yamaha Disklavier is factory built and installed. Could not be
added after purchasing the baby grand.

Other Players are very good (or better) and up to date in technology
as the Yamaha Disklavier. The only difference is that these Players
are installed by local dealers or technicians. Few are being sent
to the Players mananufacture for installation.

As we all know, the piano action and components are very complex and
sensitive. All aftermarket Players installation must touch these
components. Therefore, these Players must be installed PROPERLY or
the sensitive parts may not work correctly. I have heard stories
about a bad Player installation could ruin your grand.

The bottom line is that if you could find a dealer or technician
LOCALLY who could do a proper installation of these Players, you are
in good shape. Always ask for lots of references.

In my case, the references weren't good enough to take a chance.
Also, I used the Piano Book by Larry Fine to do initial research on
all pianos. Again this book is only for reference. You need to do
your own research in your local area.

Hope this help.
