Questions For Any Owners of A Mark IV Disklavier

Questions For Any Owners of A Mark IV Disklavier

2004-12-04 by Tom Wheeler

I am considering trading my DC3A disklavier for a DC3M4t disklavier. I
have not yet been able to see or play a DC3M4t and so I have two
concerns that can be answered by anyone who owns a Mark IV disklavier.

 (1) The Mark III disklaviers like my DC3A have two 60 watt speakers
mounted under the piano firing straight downward. . The DC3M4t has two
20 watt speakers mounted at an angle so as to deflect ensemble sounds
outward from the piano There is a significant difference in the power
rating of the speakers (60 watt vs. 20 watt) between the Mark III and
Mark IV disklaviers. Can you tell me if you are able to get the Mark IV
disklaviers to play ensemble sounds sufficiently loudly to balance the
volume of the ensemble sounds against the acoustic piano?

(2) I understand that the input/output center of the Mark IV disklavier
includes at least one USB port. However, from Yamaha's specifications
for the Mark IV I cannot tell if this is a USB 2.0 or USB 1.0 (much
slower speed) port. Can someone who owns a Mark IV tell me if the USB
port is 2.0. On their web site, Yamaha states that "Certain USB storage
devices may not function properly with the Disklavier Mark IV series.
For a list of compatible products, please visit
www.yamaha.com/disklavier." However, I cannot find any such list of USB
compatible storage devices. Has any owner of a Mark IV disklavier
attempted to attach an external USB drive to the Mark IV's I/O center?
Did it work properly?

Thanks in advance to any Mark IV owner who can respond to these questions.

Tom

My Mk IV sounds good to me with ensemble and CDs. I
never had a Mk III so I can't compare. There are a
couple of USB 2 ports and I regularly use one for a
thumb drive. It works well and is vastly superior to
floppies.

On the downside I am a little disappointed by some
clunkiness of the interface, the aggravating tendency
for entered song titles to revert or disappear and the
relatively poor range of the wireless network it uses.
On the other hand I suppose that if it was more
powerful it could compete with the wireless network in
my house.

In all it is a great instrument.

BTW there is certainly no amplifier hum.

Re: [disklavier] Questions For Any Owners of A Mark IV Disklavier

Garry,

Thank you very much for kindly responding and answering my questions.
My Yamaha disklavier dealer called me this afternoon to tell me that he
had a DC3M4t which arrived yesterday set up and ready for me to look
at. I will be getting a chance to see and play it tomorrow afternoon.

I suspect that if you are pleased with the balance between the ensemble
(tone generated) sound volume and the volume of the acoustic piano, then
I will be to. Perhaps the efficiency of the speakers in the Mark IV
disklaviers is greater than in the Mark III models. Thanks for letting
me know that the USB on the Mark IV is USB 2.0 since I wanted to be able
to use an external USB 2.0 HD for additional storage should the need
arise. It's also nice to hear that there is no amplifier hum although I
do not have that problem on my present DC3A either.

I suspect that Yamaha rushed the software controlling the wireless to
get the piano to market by Christmas. I feel confident that Yamaha will
address quickly problems that may exist in the software via user
installed firmware/software upgrades as they have done in the past.

Thank you again.

I could use a little advice

2004-12-04 by Art Goldberg

I recently purchased a piano with a pianomation system. I would like to be
able to play midi files that I can download online. What do I need to do to
either create discs that I can play in the unit or alternatively, to hook up
the usb output from a laptop to the midi-input on the pianomation unit?

Thanks for the help...

You're more than welcome Tom. I am also expecting
some software upgrades - or even upgrades to the palm
top computer that is the interface controller. In all
it appears to be a vastly improved system vs. the Mk
III. The volume control of the acoustic piano vs. the
Mk III is also much improved.

Bottom line: I'm really pleased with the purchase and
I suspect you will be too.

I have been successful in using an Eridol (by Roland) USB to MIDI
interface with a Compaq laptop. About $40. I'm using it with a DKV
but should work with any MIDI input device. There is some question
about which USB types it works with.
