I am new to the group and was looking for a way to transfer music from the PC

unformatted disk.
The MX 80 only works with PC-formatted double-density (DD) disks and E-SEQ song files.
Assuming that you have purchased pre-formatted DD disks or that you have formatted DD disks in your Disklavier, you should be all set as far as the disks are concerned.
People often get goofed up with disk formats when they format a high-density (HD) disk in their Disklavier. The Disklavier--in this case--does not know the difference between DD and HD. Therefore, it formats the disk as DD. However, a modern PC knows that the disk is an HD disk because the disk has a permanent hole on one side, but the PC refuses to read it because the format is incorrect.
If you must use HD disks, cover the permanent hole on the disk to fool the PC into thinking that it is a DD disk and then format it in your Disklavier.
As far as transfering song files is concerned, be aware that if you are working with Standard MIDI Files on your PC, you will have to acquire software to convert the song files to E-SEQ in order to use them with your Disklavier.
You can instantly remove all of these headaches (and get a tone generator as part of the package) if you add a Yamaha DSR1 to your Disklavier. The DSR1 will connect to your existing control unit with MIDI cables. For the most part, you will interact solely with the DSR1 control unit instead of your MX80 control unit. The DSR1 has a built-in tone generator, reads DD and HD disks, and works with both E-SEQ and SMFs. The DSR1 will also enable you to expand later with a DCD1 CD player if you desire.
