As other people have said, at the time this would have probably cost a lot 
of money to implement, and probably wasn't really considered necessary (a 
complete performance will fit on a floppy easily). For longer playback 
MIDI could be used.

It is possible to get MIDI players now that take flash cards, and they 
don't cost an arm and a leg. With a cheap (ie $10) card reader/writer you 
could transfer midi files to a card (say 256MB) and have one hell of a lot 
of music available!
