I have always used a replacement from Yamaha, but perhaps another brand floppy drive would work if it used the same amount of power to run it and the cable connections would match. The software in the MX80 Disklavier ONLY reads Yamaha proprietary ESEQ (.fil) format from a double density 720k floppy. However, you could play music on the MX80 from a laptop or desktop computer, equipped with a MIDI interface and one MIDI cable connected to the MIDI IN on the MX80. Put MIDI format 0 files on a playlist and you are all set. Or, you could use the Yamplayer software and put ESEQ files into a play list.
