Please Help!!!!!!!!!!! on MX80 Disklavier

2006-02-03 by bokyoungkim

Hi there,

I just purchased MX80 with control unit DKC5R, tone generator TG100
and small accessories. I bought for the piano itself, so there is no
warrantee on control unit. I'm just trying to work it out by myself to
play. When I insert a Yamaha disk, it says "unformatted disk". So I
have found an old 2DD disk and managed to do the formatting for a min
and says "CANNOT format!". When it gets inserted again, it
says "CONVERT DISK" Anyone has any ideas how to get this going? I
heard that it had been sitting for a while like a display model.while.
Maybe disk drive should be cleaned or replaced?

Any advices will be appreciated.
Thanks

RE: [disklavier] Please Help!!!!!!!!!!! on MX80 Disklavier

2006-02-04 by John Hancock

You could try

Get the DK tools. Which only run on Windows 98

Format your floppy to 720 mb. If you then explore the disk with DK explore
(one of the tools) and right click on the icon that it displays (with a red
cross). Choose make directory file (or something like that) You should then
see that icon without a red cross through it. Put the disk in your DK and
it will work. The text with the tools tell you how to use them. I figured
that bit out for myself though after purchasing a load of DD disks that
didn't seem to want to format in my vintage DK.

I've forgotten where to get these tools but people on this site will tell
you.

Worst case, I need to replace the floppy disk drive. Does anyone know
exact spec. of the floppy disk drive? Does it have to be "YAMAHA"
disk drive part? I wonder if I can replace with floppy disk drive
from a computer.

Thanks Ellen

Re: Please Help!!!!!!!!!!! on MX80 Disklavier

2006-02-05 by bokyoungkim

Thank you very much for your input. Much appreciated... What is
this "DK tool" (i.e. I still can't get it) for? We want to try if
windows 98 can read the Yamaha floppy which is formatted 720 mb? It
can be read, then there is problem with the disklavier disk. If no,
there is problem with the floppy disk?

Thank you.

RE: [disklavier] Re: Please Help!!!!!!!!!!! on MX80 Disklavier

2006-02-05 by John Hancock

I have a Vintage Cart grand recently purchased. The dealer put a new disk
drive in when I bought it (Yamaha) so I new the drive was ok. But when I
bought a batch of DD disks, they wouldn't format. I discovered that if I
format the disk on a w98 computer to 720 mb.

And then use explore (one of the dk tools) (do a search for disklavier
tools) or just ask Carol Beigel on this site where to get them.

Sooooooo. Open explore, point it to the floppy drive (with your 720mb
formatted disk in it) and open it. You will see a file called PIANODIR.FIL
with a red cross through it. Right click on the PIANODIR.FIL and choose
create index. It will create it. That's the job done. Put the disk in the
DK and it will now see it and work.

Why on earth the DK won't format the DD disks which I made the extra effort
to source... I don't know. But anyway... It is best to format them on a
computer anyway because that way you will be able to see the disk on the
computer.. Make backups.. Convert them to midi files etc.

OK... I've just done search and couldn't see them. I've got them but I
don't know if it's legal to pass them on. Is it ok to do that Carol? The
zip file is only 25k big.

If the Yamaha floppy was formatted by someone else, they may not have done
it properly and so it wouldn't include a PIANODIR.FIL

If that's the case, the DK wouldn't be able to read it. So it might not be
a faulty drive.

Thank you.

Thanks for the info. One more question on the same thread, does it
have to be double density floppy drive from Yamaha or it could be any
DD floppy drive? I took it apart and try it with computer HD FD and
disklavier doesn't recognize it.

RE: [disklavier] Re: Please Help!!!!!!!!!!! on MX80 Disklavier

2006-02-06 by John Hancock

It has to be Double density double sided. I have used HD disks but you have
to put tape over the hole opposite the read write protection hole. I had an
instance where the tape came off in the drive unit so I sourced the DD disks
I mentioned.

It makes no difference if it's Yamaha. They are all the same.

Re: Please Help!!!!!!!!!!! on MX80 Disklavier

2006-02-06 by bokyoungkim

Sorry I wasn't clear on the question. I have problem with the double-
density FD driver (not floppy disk itself). Once I get the driver
working I can format the floppy to 720K format. So the question
still remains Can I use the any DD floppy driver on Dislavier
controller or does it have to be the one from yamaha?

Thank you very much in advance.

Thank you for the info Carol. Does it have to be ordered from yamaha
or it could be any double-density floppy drive?

Bokyoungkim,

Take a look at these old posts for information on what you can
replace the floppy drive with:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/disklavier/message/2937

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/disklavier/message/2490

And good luck!

Re: [disklavier] Re: Please Help!!!!!!!!!!! on MX80 Disklavier

2006-02-06 by Carol Beigel

I have always used a replacement from Yamaha, but
perhaps another brand floppy drive would work if it
used
the same amount of power to run it and the cable
connections would match. The software in the MX80
Disklavier ONLY reads Yamaha proprietary ESEQ (.fil)
format from a double density 720k floppy.

However, you could play music on the MX80 from a laptop
or desktop computer, equipped with a MIDI interface and
one MIDI cable connected to the MIDI IN on the MX80.
Put MIDI format 0 files on a playlist and you are all
set. Or, you could use the Yamplayer software and put
ESEQ files into a play list.

On most Yamaha equipment, (esp. earlier models, such as the MX80) you need to get the replacement drive from YAMAHA as they tend not to be the same specification (even down to the connectors/pinouts) as a standard PC type drive.

RE: [disklavier] Re: Please Help!!!!!!!!!!! on MX80 Disklavier

2006-02-20 by Bruce Grembowski

I wouldn't recommend using an HD floppy with the hole taped over. Also, it is
better to format and write to the DD floppies using an actual DD drive, not an
HD drive.

The reason has to due with the size and strength of the read/write head. For
the older DD drives, the head is bigger and stronger. Also, the floppies are
manufactured to support this.

So, while an HD floppy with a taped-over hole will format to 720KB and seem
fine on your computer, the Disklavier unit may have trouble reading it.

Grem

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
