There many different kinds of piano lamps on the market. Consumers seem to have many different preferences. That is the one reason for my reluctance to make a specific recommendation. However, I'll tell you what I use. It's called a "Grand Piano Contemporary Model". You can view it at
http://www.musictreasures.com/Instruments/Equipment/Music-Stands/25213.html
I'm pleased with the job it does. I like the bright, white, glareless, uniform illumination across the entire music desk and I like the lamp's minimal profile.
My other reasons for hesitating to make a recommendation are these annoyances:
* The price is obscene (although we Yamaha owners are accustomed to that).
* Like you, I was concerned about scratching the music desk. I attach and remove the lamp frequently because I close up and cover the piano whenever I'm not playing it. The lamp's clamp, while felt-lined, does have metal edges that could nick or scratch. To prevent my klutzy handling from damaging the finish, I covered part of the upper edge of the music desk with a four-inch length of masking tape. That does the job for now, although one day I'll have the task of removing the dried-on adhesive.
* I didn't care for the supplied four each 15 watt incandescent bulbs. The light was too yellow. I risked my warranty by substituting some expensive specialty bulbs: 20 watt KX2000 krypton-xenon. They produce a beautiful white light and seem to last forever. The only catch was that the ceramic shoulder of that lamp prevented the lamp from reaching the central electrical contact of the socket. I corrected that by adding a small dab of solder to each of the lamps' bottom contacts.
* The recess for each bulb is a very tight space. It's a job for tiny fingers to install or remove the bulbs. (That applies to the original bulbs, as well.)
* With the piano lamp mounted on the music desk, the desk must be tilted slightly away from you; otherwise, the weight of the lamp will tilt the desk too far toward you. (When I do not need to use the lamp, I usually like to have the desk positioned a single notch back from vertical, but I cannot when using this lamp.)
* Invariably, when the lamp is first attached, it will hang there crooked and askew. With your hands on the ends of the cylindrical lamp housing, just guide it into proper position and it will stay there.
You can find many different models at the above link. Good luck in finding a lamp that you like.

Actually the high gloss polyester finish is much stronger than the lacquered wood finish. It is almost impervious to anything except scratching, but scratches can be buffed out. It is resistent to water and alcohol. I see a lot of those clip on lights on high gloss finishes and there has not been a problem. Just make sure that each side of the clip has felt. I can't tell you how many service calls I have done due to buzzing sounds that were coming from the lighting!
