Actually the high gloss polyester finish is much
stronger than the lacquered wood finish.  It is almost
impervious to anything except scratching, but scratches
can be buffed out.  It is resistent to water and
alcohol.  I see a lot of those clip on lights on high
gloss finishes and there has not been a problem.  Just
make sure that each side of the clip has felt.
