Joan, The way to set this up _is_ somewhat confusing. As you have discovered, if the device is set up as a client (by selecting "Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)" in the "Wireless Mode" pop-up of the Airport Admin Utility), the ethernet port is not enabled. What you need to do is select "Create a Wireless Network (Home Router)" in this pop-up. This will allow the ethernet port to be active. Then you need to set up your main wireless router as a WDS "main base station" and the Airport Express as a WDS "remote base station". This is what allows the Express to join your wireless network.
