Both formats work just fine. The E-SEQ format simply predates SMF. Yamaha continues to publish Disklavier software in E-SEQ format in order support people who purchased early model Disklaviers. <<I would like to take my "slimline" Sony Vaio laptop and set it up to store and send files to the piano.>> Excellent idea. <<I have found several USB midi adapters, I need to find one that supports Win2000. If he/she is not familiar with this issue, try Kenny Bergle at Sweetwater Sound: (800) 222-4700 The Sweetwater people are extremely knowledgeable about MIDI issues, computer hookups, etc., although they may not be Disklavier experts.
