While it won't sound any different,
there are some other advantages to E-SEQ over midi. By using the
E-SEQ Explorer utility, it is a snap to arrange the file play order
(drag & drop), title the disk, and title each selection. You can even
turn on Yamaha write protection flag for some or all of the files (this
will prevent someone from copying the file using the controller).
On the down side, you can't easily
share the masterpieces you record with the rest of the midi world
(PianoDisc) that doesn't own a disklavier.
Since my hard drive is large and midi's are
small, I usually keep dual copies of the public domain material I can share with
others.

Since your Disklavier supports both file types, there is no reason to convert
one type to another. Both formats work just fine. The E-SEQ format simply
predates SMF. Yamaha continues to publish Disklavier software in E-SEQ format
in order support people who purchased early model Disklaviers.

Excellent idea.

I would suggest that you start with your Disklavier dealer. If he/she is not
familiar with this issue, try Kenny Bergle at Sweetwater Sound:
(800) 222-4700
The Sweetwater people are extremely knowledgeable about MIDI issues, computer
hookups, etc., although they may not be Disklavier experts.
