This works. However, you can save half of the effort by cutting the left hand 
notes from track 1 and pasting them into a new track 2.

Here is another tip:  Some sequencers will show a single piano track on two 
staves in notation view. Depending upon the nature of the piano part, the 
split that the sequencer does to display the parts in notation may come close 
to matching the split that you want. In this case,  you can select the notes 
from one staff, cut them, and paste them into a new track.
