Re: [disklavier] Wireless MIDI Adapter Questions

2008-03-06 by Spencer_Lists

Greetings uhhmmmmmmmmmm,

that would probably work but there is a "better" device in my opinion if you want to use it with a notebook. the problem with the midair is that you have to connect it with a usb cable and then have the little box dangling around or duct tape it to the computer. there is another device which is a little more money. it is called WIDI. they sell a pair of devices similar to the midair but also one that is a USB dongle that plugs right into the notebook USB port. it is tiny, like a wireless mouse dongle. i have this system and it works very well. the only problem i had was that i have interference on the low channel numbers and have to use higher numbers. the dongle is sold separately and the regular units are sold in pairs so you end up with an extra unless you share a set with a friend. google for WIDI-XU and WIDI_X8. the company's web site is www.cme-pro,com

i am now using my piano as an alarm clock with the wireless connection. i wrote a program that schedules the playing of midi files including the random playing from a folder. the wireless link was the inspiration to finish the program so it plays randomly. now i can run the program from my bedroom computer (without having to do a whole network solution)and have the piano wake me with a series of randomly chosen MIDI files. i can schedule soft selections at 7:00 and play louder ones as the time goes by. i have three pianos and can play them all from the one computer by choosing different wireless channels.

if you don't care about clunkiness or if you want to use a desktop computer, the midair is probaly just as good as the WIDI and costs less.
