Wireless MIDI Adapter Questions

Wireless MIDI Adapter Questions

2008-03-06 by uhhmmmmmmmmmm

Now that I've had my DC2A all of a week (!) I'm thinking it would be
cool to be able to play MIDI files stored on my laptop wirelessly to my
DC2A. Is that possible? Would this device work?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823143004

Would I be able to "send" a MID or FIL file from my laptop to the
DC2A? How would it begin to play? Does the external device (the
laptop) show up as a channel like the Fd, CD, 1, 2, 3, etc. channels on
the control unit? Do I also need particular software to make this work?

The M-Audio should work fine to play via MIDI. I have DC3 Pro and wanted to
have a bi-directional wireless MIDI connection to my computer and sequencer,
so I used CME's WIDI-8X sinve the M-Audio is uni-directional and wouldn't
do everything I wanted. The WIDI is more expensive but does flawless
bi-directional real-time MIDI with no perceptable delay, so I can play,
record, and even use the DC3 keyboard as a midi controller keyboard in real
time.

Thanks for the input. I'm just learning about this capability so I
want to read up some before deciding what to do. I also found Carol
Beigel's Home Page to be very informative. I suppose for now I only
need uni-direction, but perhaps I should buy the more capable
connector for future capabilities.

Greetings uhhmmmmmmmmmm,

that would probably work but there is a "better" device in my opinion if you want to use it with a notebook. the problem with the midair is that you have to connect it with a usb cable and then have the little box dangling around or duct tape it to the computer. there is another device which is a little more money. it is called WIDI. they sell a pair of devices similar to the midair but also one that is a USB dongle that plugs right into the notebook USB port. it is tiny, like a wireless mouse dongle. i have this system and it works very well. the only problem i had was that i have interference on the low channel numbers and have to use higher numbers. the dongle is sold separately and the regular units are sold in pairs so you end up with an extra unless you share a set with a friend. google for WIDI-XU and WIDI_X8. the company's web site is www.cme-pro,com

i am now using my piano as an alarm clock with the wireless connection. i wrote a program that schedules the playing of midi files including the random playing from a folder. the wireless link was the inspiration to finish the program so it plays randomly. now i can run the program from my bedroom computer (without having to do a whole network solution)and have the piano wake me with a series of randomly chosen MIDI files. i can schedule soft selections at 7:00 and play louder ones as the time goes by. i have three pianos and can play them all from the one computer by choosing different wireless channels.

if you don't care about clunkiness or if you want to use a desktop computer, the midair is probaly just as good as the WIDI and costs less.

Do you need two of these? What do you connect to your computer and
DC3A?

Greetings sjhart110110,

WIDI-X8 comes a a set of two bi-directional box type devices. You can use this pair with one on the computer and one on the piano but the best solution is to get a WIDI-XU dongle and use that on the notebook computer. You can buy a WIDI-X8 pair and share it with another piano owner and each buy one XU.

Re:Wireless MIDI Adapter Questions

For mac users, would an airport express hooked up to the disklavier accomplish the same wireless connection to a wireless-enabled computer, or is there something about the midi file’s complexity that would make the airport express a poor choice? Thanks...

Re: [disklavier] Re:Wireless MIDI Adapter Questions

Greetings Joel,

You can set up all sorts of networks that will allow transmission of MIDI but nothing will be easy. I have waited for about 5 years for a simple reliable wireless MIDI solution because I didn't want to set up all the remote application stuff. WIDI is plug and play. It has rejuvenated my interest in my pianos. I now have John Farrell's MIDI files playing randomly throughout the day without having to dedicate a computer at the piano and all the care that that involves.

I use the M Audio adapters to connect the Disklavier controller to a DCD1.
The DCD1 is in a rack on the other side of my living room, and is hooked up
to my surround sound system. Works great. The CD's play through the stereo
while the piano plays the accompanying piano parts.

Hi Spencer, are both halves of the WIDI-X8 identical or do they have
different plug configurations? Do both sides have usb capability and
a power transformer for flexibility? I couldn't tell from their web
site.

If both sides are the same, then I'd be willing to buy the WIDI-X8
and 2 WIDI-XU interfaces and split them into 2 sets.

Anyone want half of a WIDI-X8 and a WIDI-XU? It will cost $165
shipped.

Email me offline if interested.

Greetings uhhmmmmmmmmmm,

the two WIDI-X8 units are identical and have midi in out USB and power connections. one set of X8 plus two XUs will make two complete sets for use with 2 note book computers and two pianos.

Re: Wireless MIDI Adapter Questions

One more question about the WIDI-X8 and WIDI-XU pairing. How is its transmission range? I see the specs say 80 meters without obstacles. What have users’ experiences been? My desktop computer is about 28 walking feet from the disklavier, jogging around a few plaster wall corners. Does it sound like I’ll have reliable reception?

Thanks again for the help,
Joel

RE: [disklavier] Re: Wireless MIDI Adapter Questions

2008-03-11 by Phil Becker

I am using Widi-X8 to WIDI-X8, and I've seen good results up to 100ft
through one wall. There is also an 802.11 Wi-Fi internet Access point about
mid-way (near the wall in one of the rooms). I haven't tried any further
than that. I chose to use the fixed channel assignment (not automatic) and
it turned out that channel 1 worked just fine so I didn't experiment
further.

I have no experience with the WIDI-XU, so I can't say if it has the same
range or not.

Greetings Joel,

the frequency of WIDI makes it pretty much line of site. if you are using a desktop computer you should use the X8 pair instead of using an XU unless you use a USB extension to get the XU out in the open. the clearer the path, the better. i have no problem with the XU in the back of my notebook which is in a loft facing away from the loft wall that is over the piano. over the low wall and down to the piano is about 22 feet and the connection is perfect. it also works with my other piano in another room which is through a 10 ft long hall and then another 18 feet (for a total distance of 38 feet with a right angle turn and other minor obstructions) but it does not work from the loft through this hall etc of a total distance, with turns, of about 60 feet. depending on what you mean by "jogging around a few plaster wall corners" it does sound pretty hopeful.

if the computer and piano are both in fixed locations, is there any way to just run a wire? i have run MIDI wires of over 150 feet without problems.

PS if anyone is interested, i have an application that i wrote for sending configuration sysex to the WIDI XU from a windows command line. no idea why anyone would want it but i wrote it for a friend and it does work. i use it myself instead of the program that CME provides but that is just because i have it.

Greetings Phil,

one thing that this post reminded me of is that some channels work better in some settings than others. channel 1 does not work at all for me and the higher channels work better so this should be considered in testing. i guess i have some interference on the lower channels.

Re: Wireless MIDI Adapter Questions

2008-04-01 by uhhmmmmmmmmmm

I just installed my WIDI-XU and WIDI-X8 pair. It works great, but I
do have one problem. With the WIDI-XU, I must open the WIDI-control
program that you can download from the cme site and click on
AutoSearch before it will connect to the WIDI-X8. The manual makes
it sound like the device should automatically search for another
available WIDI device.

If you own a WIDI-XU, is that your experience? I hate the idea of
having to manually configure (select AutoSearch) from the WIDI-
control program each time I restart my computer.

Thanks for any feedback on this.

for me and the higher channels work better so this should be
considered in testing. i guess i have some interference on the lower
channels.
