Disklavier

Well we are talking about a few things now..

Yeup as Kevin said it has an input jack for what ever analog audio you want, it also has a MIDI IN yes, so you can use a PC (or electric keyboard etc) to chuck midi to it and it will play. Also it as Optic out and I think optic in so thats pretty cool... infact it has lots of audio in/out's around the place.

But it also plays standard wave fles, and ofcorse it plays wave files with midi encoded into them, I have lots of these from a guy selling custom disks from ebay they are great! (he even emails a temp download link with the 600meg .iso, only takes 10 - 15 mins to download with decent ADSL speed)

The only reason I was a bit bitter about the wave file support, was it's picky with them, I had no problem with a wave with midi encoded, but with just a few random wave files from my computer, some played and some did not. I ripped normal CD's with my PC and copied the .wav file to the Disklavier and it works perfectly (its also faster and workes better than the built in CD ripper on the Disklavier, quite often it randomally errors and its annoying, version 3 did not fix this).

These days a $49 DVD player has USB IN and it reads anything pretty much... graphic files, most sound files, mpegs plus any old Divx or XVid format.. you can even pay a bit more and get networked multi media boxes with HD's that are great and handle ANYTHING... if it can't you can get the Codec.

But Anyway, I suppose Yamaha want to keep consistancy and compatibiliy on their pianos rather than support any old audio file. These are just PC's running a heavily modded linux version so they obviously choose not to. But lets hope they will be more open to other types of audio files in the future.
