During recording, key sensors and (in the case of DC3 and larger grands and DU1A) hammer sensors record the MIDI note-on/note/off messages. During playback, solenoids under the back ends of the keys (inside the piano) push the back ends of the keys up in order to throw the hammers toward the strings. When a technician calibrates the instrument, both systems are as checks on each other. Regards, PianoBench
