Can somone confirm that the devices that actuate the keys in the "play" mode are different from the devices that function from the keys in the "record" mode? Are they two separate devices or is the onboard computer different, or both? This is a Mark III W/CD model. Thanks, Dan

The record and playback systems are separate. During recording, key
sensors and (in the case of DC3 and larger grands and DU1A) hammer
sensors record the MIDI note-on/note/off messages. During playback,
solenoids under the back ends of the keys (inside the piano) push the
back ends of the keys up in order to throw the hammers toward the
strings.

When a technician calibrates the instrument, both systems are as
checks on each other.

On the Mark IV, the sensors are also used during playback (DSP servo control), which was previously only available on the old Pro series. On the NEW PRO, you also have magnetic sensors on the solenoids, which add even more accuracy to this servo control.
