You didn't do any of this disk cloning or expanding under Windows did you? That would be bad. Windows likes to mark the drive's boot sector...Have you placed the original drive back in the piano to make sure it isn't damaged? Anyway, I suppose that your warranty is voided now? That's the big concern I would have with doing a drive swap. We need for this to be sanctioned by Yamaha...that's why an install CD would be *really* nice.

Cool well that explains why as much as I tried I could not get a fresh install working. I bet those images we have 'can' be used or are not too far off to do a full install... but it's pretty stupid these days to make people post an entire HD to some random place when a customer might want a fresh install. Also with a new version peoples boxes might get a bit 'patchy' and so version 4 might be a secret fresh install, who knows!
So anyway, for now I got around it, just clone the drive, with the software (GHOST) or (PARTITION MAGIC) then you can just stretch the last partition which is used for storage.
I can get around the little fsck error by not having the startup test, but once I have more time and I get my Linux mate over he will run the scan in single user mode and repair the little block that it thinks is screwy. (keep in mind that I have preserved EVERYTHING exactly how Yamaha have it setup).
Meanwhile, everything is working wonderfully and so now I have about 300GB to store music :-)
But I would say, for most people, it's not worth the bother as most of the good music is midi anyway :p, so even 100 meg free is thousands of songs......
I am generally disappointed with the Piano Soft with Audio anyway, I wish when you buy 'popular' songs, Yamaha re-mastered things, so the original piano does not exist except your own piano playing, ie Bette Middler, you can hear the original piano in the background and your piano plays over it....so it sounds a bit silly and relies on your piano being set loud.
Cheers,
Philip

Subject: [disklavier] Re: HDD Upgrade MARK 4
Hi,
the update CDs (any version) don't contain the full operating system, only those bits required to implement the changes for the new version. If a drive crashes (or you have a blank HDD for your Disklavier) it needs to be returned to Yamaha Service to have the full operating system re-installed. The Disks used for this are not available for general circulation, probably due the fact that some parts of the software are not open source. Depending on the inclination of Yamaha in Japan, it might be possible to provide a service in the future where a customer can buy a bigger HDD, send it to their local Yamaha Service agent and have the software installed. Not being a LINUX geek, I don't know if it would be necessary to add extra code to accomodate different drives/partitions.
Bill, if you read this, it might be something to suggest to the technical team in Japan ( or I can ask them in December )

Yamaha will not allow you to place Yamaha software of any type on anything but the internal drive. Of course, you are free to put your recordings on the external hard drive, but rarely are those audio CD recordings which are what consume a great amount of space on the internal HD. The only time that Yamaha allows you to place their software on the external USB drive is when you back up the Mark IV to the external USB drive, but there is no way to access the software on the external USB drive that is in the
backup and certainly no way to play the backed up material from the USB drive..

Also I may be way off base with this comment, but isn¢t it interesting that until someone else figured out how to run their Disklavier from a PC, did Yamaha immediately come out with the same feature on the very next upgrade to the software. Maybe we all need a little push sometimes. Don¢t stop looking for the solution to your error problem.

of known interest in being able to upgrade the HD storage, may I voice my request for a larger drive as well. My drive has but 5 GB left on it and my concern is that if I continue to load to capacity, I know that is when the drive will slow or stop. Plus I would think that Yamaha would ultimately be able to sell more software if the systems had more space.

> Third, and forgive my naivety, but could this issue be resolved with an external USB drive. Is it completely possible to add an external 500GB drive and have the Disklavier read from that just as though it were an internal drive? Or is the external drive purely for backup.
