It looks like APC had the sense to put fuses in their phone and data protectors (many don't)as I had recommended. It is not clear if they will offer protection of the phone line if it is connected to a shared (and possibly faulty) ground so a separate ground is still recommended. Every time they are subjected to a surge, the device will need to be replaced unless the fuses are user replaceable so make sure to buy a spare or two, or make your own with about $5 worth of parts and use fuse holders so you can replace them. For the truly paranoid, a ground monitor would be a good addition to the arsenal.
In a typical house there should not be any need for network protection. The surges are going to come from the power line or the phone or cable connection so protecting these (very well) should be enough for most situations.
