What is the balance setting on the tone generator?  Is the TG over 100? 
Also, on a MarkIII, the volume control on the silent box needs to be turned 
up.  This is the box where you plug in the headphones. The amplifier to 
which you plugged in the speakers also has volume control knobs.  Are they 
turned all the way up?
