Hi I tried to hook my DU1E3 (which comes with no speakers) to my stereo system unsuccessfully.Yahama suggested using a Rolls MX22 mixer to boost the output from the E3 unit. Any comments about the sound quality would be appreciated. Thanks Joseph

Anytime you connect speakers to a Disklavier, they must be POWERED speakers - like as in heavy because they have their own power supply. Historically we have used Advent speakers that cost $300. However, just bought a pair of M-Audio Stupdiophie AV40 speakers for $135 for my desktop computer. They might also work for a DKV. I own a MarkIIXG and the audio is monaural. Still sounds great with one large Yamaha studio speaker. Carol Beigel ----- Original Message -----

Hi Carol, Thank you for the infomation . My thought was not to have an extra pair of speakers in the room , if I could get good sound quality out of the stereo .However, I'm not opposed to buying the speakers and will look at what you suggested. In the intermin I ordered the mixer Yamaha suggested and will post the results. Regards, Joseph --- In disklavier@yahoogroups.com, "Carol Beigel" <thecarolb@...> wrote:

Hi Joseph, You will have good results with the mixer. The issue is an impedance mis-match. The mixer will allow you to compensate for the mis-match. As Carol said, the Disklavier is designed for powered speakers. The mixer will allow you to use to stereo system in its place. Sound quality will be good. Greetings jschembri2000,
it may be the wrong mixer . it may not deal with low impedance inputs correctly. you can try the radio schack cheapo mixer which you can get easily and can return just as easily if it doesn't work. it can be run from a battery which will eliminate any power supply sourced hum. i am not sure if it will like a low impedance input from the rca jacks so you may also need rca to 1/4" phono adapters to use the mic inputs. Radio Design Labs has a variety of solutions but they tend to be pricey. These are what I use on my Live Performance LX pianos but i find the Radio Design Labs devices on E-Bay.
it is quite possible that you have a grounding problem causing the hum or a bad shield on one of the wires. especially if youhave an impedance mismatch and need to compensate by added gain, it can be extreme. all the connecting cables
must be of good quality. no reason to go nuts with monster cables for $50 each but they should not be cheapos either. substitute different ones and see if it makes a difference. oxidation on contacts can be the problem but most devices and cables use gold plating today and this should not be a problem in new stuff. it is possible that you have a ground loop and need to isolate either the power supplies or the input to the mixer.
there are so many possible sources for hum that unless you have an oscilloscope it is best to just substitute parts, starting with the most readily available until you fix it. even a tiny section of unshielded cable (or really badly shielded cable) can cause a lot of hum so quality can really make a difference. if possible do not buy cables at radio schlock. they are generally very bad. a good stereo shop should have intermediate quality cables that should work. for rca cables. the ones that come with av
equipment are generally OK even the cheap ones because they have to be decent for video. crappy adapters can cause problems so try to avoid them.

Buy some good powered speakers and send the mixer back! Also, make sure the Disklavier is connected to a properly grounded outlet. You need a 3-prong recepticle, not a 2-way one with a gray adapter. Carol ----- Original Message -----

What is the balance setting on the tone generator? Is the TG over 100? Also, on a MarkIII, the volume control on the silent box needs to be turned up. This is the box where you plug in the headphones. The amplifier to which you plugged in the speakers also has volume control knobs. Are they turned all the way up? Carol ----- Original Message -----

Thanks Carol the TG was set at 038 as well as an Audio volume adj that controls the pre-recorded audio on the CD's. The manual also explains a third adj that is used when you play using the voice function (which sounds to advanced to me at the moment).I have them all set over 100, they max out at 127. The speakers sound great. Best, Joseph -- In disklavier@yahoogroups.com, "Carol Beigel" <thecarolb@...> wrote:
