Speakers vs Stereo

Hi 

I tried to hook my DU1E3 (which comes with no speakers) to my stereo system unsuccessfully.Yahama suggested using a Rolls MX22 mixer to boost the output from the E3 unit. Any comments about the sound quality would be appreciated.
