Success!  I downloaded and installed Version 4.0 of the program, rebooted and used the front USB port as suggested.  I was able to backup the songs.

Thanks for your help.  It would certainly be worthwhile if Yamaha could provide better technical support.  For example, a FAQ section, and step by step instructions on backup, now lacking.
