Disklavier

George, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! It worked! I'm able to play the piano 
through my computer (Finale 2011) via the midi interface to the Disklavier.  As 
you suggested the channels must be set the same on both sides - at the 
disklavier midi in = 01 or HP ("That is, piano keyboard data is received on MIDI 
channel 1 and continuous pedal data (half pedal) is received on MIDI channel 3") 
[quote from Advanced Operation Manual] and set the MIDI Output of the piano part 
to MIDI channel 1.  I had thought I'd done so, but double checked setting, reset 
and it worked!  Thanks again.  In my original plea for help I detailed several 
settings which I had set that had nothing to do with getting the piano to play. 
 Being the rookie that I am I learned a few things (I mention this only for 
someone who may be as new to the MIDI process) 1.  In Finale > MIDI/Audio > 
"Play Through MIDI" and "Play Thru" mean two completely different things. 2. 
Finale is considered a quasi-sequencer and 3.  We're lucky to have a forum of 
people willing to share their time and expertise. Leon

Leon, you need to think of the Disklavier as a MIDI device that has a split 
personality: it is both a piano and a tone generator. When you send MIDI data to 
the Disklavier, the Disklavier has to decide whether to play the data with the 
piano or with its internal or external tone generator.

To make the incoming data play on the piano, you need to access the MIDI : Piano 
Part screen and set the Disklavier's Piano Receive channel. In the simplest 
situation, set the Receive Channel to 1.

Having set the piano's Receive Channel to 1, you need to look at your settings 
in Finale and set the MIDI Output of the piano part to MIDI channel 1. It 
appears as though you have set Finale to send the piano part on Channel 1. Have 
you set the Disklavier to receive on Channel 1?
