While it can be many things, the same happened to me and I will tell you what it was in my case - the floppy disk drive! It literally burned up. Sniff at the drive bay opening for a VERY strong oder. I also have an older (but wonderful) upright. I replaced the drive and all is back to normal. It took more than a week for the smell to get out of the piano!
