my STINKY Disklavier

my STINKY Disklavier

2011-02-14 by Paul Jeffers

Yes, my trusty Disklavier has an (electrical) odor problem.

The fuse blew on my Disklavier Upright SX101RB1
(older model, "gray market" from Japan)

I replaced the fuse, but the electrical smell returned, so I pulled the plug asap...

-----any ideas what this might be and the fix?

ALSO

I was playing a disk of player rolls that I had downloaded.
I read that it is possible to mess up the older models of Disklaviers if the volume is not adjusted (lowered) so perhaps I caused the problem?

Any ideas?

Not sure if that was the cause, but I do know for converted midis you have to use a program that adjusts the velocity. If it was too high it could have caused damage.

While it can be many things, the same happened to me and I will tell you what it was in my case - the floppy disk drive! It literally burned up.

Sniff at the drive bay opening for a VERY strong oder. I also have an older (but wonderful) upright. I replaced the drive and all is back to normal. It took more than a week for the smell to get out of the piano!
