Amplifying a Disklavier Pro piano

Amplifying a Disklavier Pro piano

2011-02-15 by kassey22000

Hi folks:

For those of us who dont have a Yamaha amp and speaker set included/factory installed with our Pro pianos, Im looking for clever suggestions for pumping out some real sound out of either the DKC-850 controller (2 options for audio out on the back) or out of the silent piano/headset control box on the Pro. It seems that the output in either choice is a very weak signal. Even hooked up to a set of M-Audio AV40 powered monitor speakers, it just cant keep up with the monster sound of the C5 grand (even with the lid down).

I could put a pre-amp inline, but all the additional wires and possible line interference just starts to make the piano look more like its part of a recording studio/computer room instead of a beautiful acoustic instrument in my living room. Plus Im hesitant to attach any additional equipment to the piano because of possible heat gain and sympathetic vibrations (Yamahas recommended MSP3 powered speakers are too big to fit under even a 67 grand).

Anyone come up with a cool sounding/looking solution?

Thanks!

BOSE? speakers.

They have a Acoustamass 3 speaker system. Two very small mini cubes that could be "velcro-ed" under the piano plus a big bass which can be placed anywhere. (conceal wires behind leg?) $200

I am also looking for a speaker system to use with the DKC-850. The Amp hiss from the build in piano amp is too noticeable.

What I am looking at is a SOUND BAR made for flat screen TV. They are long and thin and can be mounted under the piano, and most include a wireless SUBWOOFER...

There are also YAMAHA bars , that are all in one.. bit larger and more money.
Example of the Yamaha is YSP-4100 Digital Sound Projector with the dimensions of 40-7/16"W x 8-5/16"H x 3-9/16"D BUT costing $1700. Lower cost ones are from Samsung, Sony, Polk etc

These sound bars include an amp, thus you only need to run the power and RCA sound cables to them. Mounting will be key, with lots of felt to minimize vibrations. Wireless subwoofer can be place anywhere..

Like to hear others thoughts on these.

I am MOST interested to hear so many people have had a problem with AMP hiss. I too have had a problem since I installed the 850.
With other unrelated equipment the problem seemed often to revolve around grounding.

When you install the 850 you place a new cable between the 850 and the old connection cable. I have noticed if I jiggle the cable near the connection input on the 850 the hiss will go away. But it comes back when I restart the equipment..

I wonder if the Yamaha engineers can look at this. It may be a simple grounding wire is needed between the 850 and the AMP.

BUT I am no engineer. Just a few thoughts...
