RePerform "preview edition" is now available

2011-06-03 by George Frederick Litterst

Good evening, everyone.

Zenph is pleased to announce the availability of its new software for editing piano performances, called RePerform. For the next two months, RePerform will be available as a free download in a "Preview" edition. This preview edition will work until version 1.0 is released in August 2011.

The preview version of RePerform is a piano-focused MIDI editor that works exclusively with files that have been recorded on Yamaha Disklavier Pro and Disklavier pianos. In order to work with the program in its current form, you need to record your piece on a Mark IIXG or later model Disklavier Pro or Disklavier. This includes the Mark III, Mark IV, E3, all versions of the Pro, and any Disklavier with a DKC-850 replacement control unit. ;

RePerform is distinguished by virtue of the way in which it understands the musical nuances of these files, including the complex and interwoven files that are produced by a Disklavier Pro. For example, when you edit the loudness of a note, you can do so with an intuitive slider that has markings that indicate pp, p, mp.....ff, et cetera. RePerform understands the actual note-on velocities that are appropriate for every dynamic level for each of the individual 88 notes on the piano.

RePerform is especially adept at handling high-resolution Disklavier Pro files. You can now work with your own performances at the same resolution the Zenph team uses as it creates its renowned re-performances of pianists such as Gould, Rachmaninoff, Tatum, Peterson, and Duke Ellington. ; In fact, it is the only MIDI editor in the world—to our knowledge—that understands the complex way in which multiple MIDI messages combine to define a high-resolution MIDI note, including:

  • note-on velocity (hammer velocity) on a scale of 0-1023
  • key velocity on a scale of 0-1023, and the idiosyncrasies of the timings of these messages
  • note-off velocity on a scale of 0-1023.

RePerform also handles una corda and sustain pedaling for Mark IV Pros on an expanded scale of 0-255.

If you are especially interested in editing Disklavier MIDI files or studying particular performances in technical depth, Zenph invites you to give RePerform a spin on your Macintosh or Windows computer.

A free download is available at:

If you do not have an account on Zenph.com, registration is required. However, you will not be asked for any payment information when you register and download the program.

NOTE: If you have previously recorded a Disklavier file, but edited it or resaved it using another sequencer, the preview version of RePerform will not open the file, because that sequencing software deleted certain valuable MIDI messages that identify the file as having been recorded on a specific Disklavier model. Future versions of RePerform will be more tolerant of Disklavier MIDI files that have been edited in this way, as well as MIDI files created on other instruments. Version 1.0 will also enable you to record directly into the program via MIDI.
