Thanks everyone!  I finally found out what the real problem was: USER ERROR!  

I'm actually embarrassed to tell you that I was plugging in the headset into one of the two "Foot Control" jacks.  It wasn't until talking to Yamaha Tech Support that he suggested removing the media center and taking it to my local piano store to test it on one of their Mark IV's that I needed to pull out a flashlight and see where the screws were that I noticed the ACTUAL two headset jacks and noticed the other set of two  jacks were labeled FOOT CTRL.   I guess that I have just been feeling down there for the two jacks that were side by side that I've been plugging them into the wrong place.
