Mark IV Silent Mode issue.

Mark IV Silent Mode issue.

2012-07-13 by kenruda

I noticed that my piano will no longer function in the silent mode when I plug in my headset in either of the two headset jacks. I get no sound from them and the hammers do not drop down like they should and I don't see the headset button on the remote. However, I can put my piano in quiet mode successfully, so that part works. Any ideas? Is there any configuration or switches or cables that I should check?

Try a full power cycle and shut down on the remote. Turn off power from mains for about 15 seconds. Power on and start up. If that doesn't work reset back to factory settings on the remote. If you still have the problem try another power cycle. That normally sorts out most issues!

Thanks, Mark!

I just tried all that you suggested and I'm still not having any luck. I also checked all of the connections underneath the piano to make sure they were okay.

Any other ideas?

I have this happen every few weeks… and the only solution (which always works) is to actually, physically, unplug the piano. I'm not sure what's going on when the piano is off (let alone in Standby mode) but I don't think it's ever fully off…and whatever current is trickling into whatever relevant subsystem is messed up, it stays that way until you fully cut-off life support… which is simply pulling the plug for 10 seconds, plugging it back in, and then letting it run through the full boot-up.

I wish there were a better solution… I'm curious if anyone has found it.

It is possible that the headphone socket is worn out/damaged. It incorporates a switch to change the piano to Silent Mode.

There are two sockets available so might be worth trying the other one. Horatio is right though, the piano needs to be physically unplugged during the power cycle. Why, I fear, might be beyond mans finding out. I would blame it on a stuck solenoid.

As long as there is power going to the piano, some areas of the processors remain active. To interrupt the power supply, you can disconnect the mains plug, as mentioned, or you can turn off the mains switch on the power supply unit (the oblong box under the piano which has the mains cable connected to it). I would recommend waiting about a minute before reconnecting the power.

Re: Mark IV Silent Mode issue.

Thanks everyone! I finally found out what the real problem was: USER ERROR!

I'm actually embarrassed to tell you that I was plugging in the headset into one of the two "Foot Control" jacks. It wasn't until talking to Yamaha Tech Support that he suggested removing the media center and taking it to my local piano store to test it on one of their Mark IV's that I needed to pull out a flashlight and see where the screws were that I noticed the ACTUAL two headset jacks and noticed the other set of two jacks were labeled FOOT CTRL. I guess that I have just been feeling down there for the two jacks that were side by side that I've been plugging them into the wrong place.

Thanks again for your support and I'm sorry for the trouble.

 -Ken

Dooohhh.
Mind you, compared to most instrument, the headphone jacks on the Mark 4 do seem to be in a bit of an awkward position.
