Sonos driving piano for Pianosoft Audio files

Sonos driving piano for Pianosoft Audio files

2012-04-23 by sjhart110110

Finally got my Sonos working with my DC850/DC3A. Store my pianosoft audio files (which I loaded into iTunes) on a NAS. Running the Sonos into the audio/analog midi in can fully drive the piano. I had been using an iPod, but now I can drive the piano directly from the WAV files stored on our NAS via the Sonos module. Works great. No more CDs or connecting my iPod! SJ

Wow, I would love to find out more about how you hooked this up. I love my Sonos system and my DC5-Pro with DKC-850 but like you I find the iPhone app lacking. Please share what you can.

Thanks much!

I only use this setup to play Pianosoft Audio files as you can not store these files in Memory or on a USB stick/drive,etc. Mark IVs allow you to store your Pianosoft Audio CDs on the hard drive.

Setup is really easy. First you have to import the CDs into iTunes. I have found that only importing as full WAV files works 99% of the time. You can not import as MP3 or apple formats as the piano will drop notes. You need to store the files on a NAS (network attached storage) or somewhere that the Sonos can access them. On my DC3a, I route the analog output of the Sonos module to both the normal RCA input and analog midi inputs of the DKC850. This allows me to play normal Sonos audio through the pianos speaker system as well as playing the analog midi files. You need to adjust the volume settings on the DKC850 to match. This includes the analog midi volume which can be found in settings. The Sonos can play the WAV files from the NAS. When the DKC850 receives the sound it will play them like a normal Pianosoft Audio CD that you would normally load into the DKC850 CD tray. I still use the normal memory for playing pure MIDI files. Use the Sonos setup to play my Pianosoft Audio songs. You can not mix and match the two. So far this seems to be working quite well. SJ

Also found out that my Pianosoft solo midi files that I converted with mid2pianoCD to create audio files also play fine through the Sonos driving my DKC850. SJ

This has been a great discovery and awesome new way to drive my disklavier. Thanks so much for bringing this option forward for other users.

I have one observation about this set-up that I wonder if others are experiencing. It seems like when I play a multiple-song playlist through Sonos, after about the 4-6 song, the piano and accompaniment starts to skip at the same time and hang. Left alone it seems to settle down in a few minutes... or if I reboot the DK head unit, the problem goes away for a while. This does not happen when using my iPhone app, DKBrowser, or just playing off the DK's internal playlist. I'm guessing that the DKC-850 memory buffer is overflowing from the data input from the Sonos player.

Anyone else experience this Buffer-Overflow issue?

I've seen this happen a few times, but not consistently. I will do some more testing. SJ
