Won't turn on or off

Won't turn on or off

2013-10-25 by Alice Sanders

This is only my second week of being a disklavier owner. I have been very careful to properly shut down my disklavier mark IV before I unplug it. This morning, I plugged it in and the light started blinking green and it will not stop blinking. It won't let me turn it on or off. I have tried the suggestion in the manual (turn off the box underneath for at least 10 seconds and then turn it back on) but the light continues to only blink. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Alice

Sometimes you might have no choice - unplug it, wait 30 seconds and repower
it. I have had this happen a couple of times with my new Mark IV, as well
as (occasionally) all manner of other "crashes", particularly when playing
midi files through the USB port from a Windows laptop. There is clearly
some buggy programming somewhere, but I have found no permanent problems.

I suggest leaving it unplugged for about 40 minutes before powering it back up.

I think the hard drive is going to have to be replaced. No amount of time unplugged is fixing it. Thank you so much for the suggestions.

If it doesn't quit blinking, then its a 99% chance that the problem is the hard drive. The drive will need to be replaced.

It's worth having a quick look at the power supply unit (long rectangular box under the piano which you plug in your mains lead into). On one side, you should see 3 LEDs before it's properly booted up. One will be flashing and two should be on permanently (there's a fourth one which doesn't come on until everything is up and running). If you don't get the 3 LEDs, you may have a power supply problem.

If the LEDs are OK, I would also suspect the hard drive. Replacement drives come with an early version of software, so you will need to update it to the latest version. You may need to used and update CD & boot disk to bring it up to version 3.00. After that, you can get onto the internet and get the latest version via broadband.

RE: Won't turn on or off

I had this same thing happen to me a while back (maybe a year or so ago). After speaking with a Yamaha tech, I was about ready to pay and get a replacement drive. Because I was already resigned to that, I decided to try more involved methods of fixing things (more involved than power cycling the piano anyway). I pulled the hard drive and put it into an old PC that I have sitting around to see what it would show on a monitor during the boot. As it turns out, the drive was booting to a certain point and finding disk errors. Then it was prompting me for whether or not I wanted to try and automatically fix them. I figured it could hurt a "dead" drive, so I let it try. I don't recall if it worked the first time or if it had to take several reboots, but it eventually reported success and didn't find any subsequent errors. I put the drive back in my piano and it booted just fine. It's been working since.

So...if you're drive is "dead", you might give this a try...

My hard drive was replaced today, under warranty, and my disklavier is working oh-so-perfectly now. Thank you for all of the information and advice.
